After the pipeline operates, the pipeline data becomes very important because it deals with process safety and personal safety around the pipeline. To create a good pipeline data management, we need the cooperation of several professions, that is

  • Pipeline engineer
  • Geodetic engineer
  • IT engineer
  • Inspection Engineer
  • Database engineer

Software for PODS Pipeline Open Data Standard

What data is needed for the pipeline? very much… design information, operational condition,¬† inspection results , history of pipeline repair, drawing, pipeline material, pipeline size etc. Due to the amount of data involved, there are some software or applications used to store the data. Software or applications commonly used are:

  • Geographical Information system (GIS). The main function of this software is to provide visualization of existing data. In some previous articles, I’ve been talking about GIS.
  • Oracle. The main function of oracle is as data storage
  • Pipeline Open Data Standard (PODS). PODS is a nonprofit industry standard association that develops and maintains the PODS Data Model, pipe data storage and exchange standards for the oil & gas industry. PODS ‘objective is to provide an environment for knowledge sharing, advance Data Models and Standards through Technical Committees that facilitate the global PODS practice community. PODS has provided the required data standardization for the pipeline. In practice, software manufacturers have provided some excel templates as per PODS recommendations. The data entry worker needs to fill the template and then upload the data to the software. A very simple job.

The next stage, the software will be responsible for handling the database process, changing the data that has been input to be displayed in the GIS. Complicated work is here. Sometimes a technical problem occurs, so that data that has been completed in the upload can not be displayed in the GIS.  IT engineers and Database engineers will play a role in creating a stable system. If there is a technical problem like this, then they will do a thorough check and make system improvements.
